Hamlet and His Characteristics free essay sample

The exemplary Tragic Hero â€Å"A saint is a man who does what he can. † Romain Rolland What is a grievous legend? Are sad legends considered to have better characteristics, but experience the ill effects of the numerous deficiencies of life? I accept that a great terrible legend is an individual that has numerous astounding characteristics for a saint, but bites the dust because of the slip-ups that he makes. As Romain stated, â€Å"A saint is a man who does what he can† and Hamlet is an ideal model on how he needed to quit any pretense of everything to focus on his vengeance. This is the reason I trust Hamlet is the ideal great heartbreaking legend, in light of the fact that in spite of the fact that he didn't do whatever wasn't right, he despite everything endured and kicked the bucket on account of his attributes. This is the reason I accept that the seven discourses of Hamlet, show the movement of his attributes, and show the numerous characteristics of a saint, along these lines making him an ideal case of a great heartbreaking legend. The primary speech in Hamlet (Act I, Scene II), discusses the enduring that Hamlet is experiencing as he understands that his dad is dead and his mom has hitched his uncle. In any case, two months dead! †nay, less, not two: So phenomenal a lord; that was, to this, Hyperion to a satyr;† (I. II. 137-140) Hamlet doesn’t get why his mom wedded so quick and gets very frantic about that. He thinks about whether she even adored his dad and this makes his consider self destruction, yet back in the Elizabethan time, self destruction was looked downward on, which is found in Act I, Scene II, Line 132-133. â€Å"†¦His standard gainst self-butcher! O God! O God! How exhausted, stale, level, and unbeneficial Seem to me all the employments of this world! † This is simply the main motivation behind why Hamlet can’t murder himself. Hamlet felt that he was the one in particular that imagined that this marriage was an unnatural and starts to loathes Claudius. Some time ago, ladies were not permitted to wed after their spouses kicked the bucket, so when Gertrude weds Claudius, Hamlet feels that something peculiar was going on. â€Å"Would have mournd longer†¦dexterity to forbidden sheets! † (I. II. 151-157) I feel that he felt that his mom just wedded Claudius with the goal that she wasn’t alone at evenings thus that she could in any case remain sovereign over Denmark. He additionally doesn’t figure Claudius can contrast with his father and a start of contempt and sicken ascends inside Hamlet for both Gertrude and Claudius. The main talk additionally shows the different great characteristics that create Hamlet as the play goes on. â€Å"It isn't, nor it can't come to great; But make me extremely upset, †for I should hold my tongue! †(I. II. 158-159) This is the principal principle quality that Hamlet, he realizes when to express his real thoughts and just discussions about his actual self with just individuals he confides in like Horatio, but then that may be the explanation he had the option to murder Claudius at long last, it additionally the motivation behind why Ophelia and Gertrude kicked the bucket as well. Since Ophelia kicked the bucket since she felt that Hamlet didn’t love her the manner in which she did to him. His mom felt that Hamlet was extremely frantic, and attempted to help him in numerous a manner, one of them was to drink the cup that would advance Hamlets wellbeing yet which was really harmed. This is the means by which the first monologue helps in quite a while attributes while demonstrating his actual characteristics. The second soliloquy(Act 1, Scene 5) in Hamlet which happens in Act I, Scene V, which when the phantom of his dad reveals to him that he was killed, and how he was killed and, who killed him. He doesn’t accept that his dad was killed by Claudius when he says, â€Å"O all you host of paradise! O earth! what else? What's more, will I couple hellfire? O, fie! †Hold, my heart ;†( I. V. 92-93) He never believed that Claudius would submit murder to get the seat of Denmark, and he comprehends why he and his mom wedded so quick. â€Å"O most malevolent lady! O lowlife, scoundrel, grinning, doomed reprobate! †(I. V. 105-106) This is the start of his contempt towards Claudius, and this is additionally where he vows to the apparition to slaughter Claudius. Hamlet likewise feels befuddled when this unnatural demonstration of nature occurs. He realizes that quite possibly this apparition is either his dad or the demon attempting to cause Hamlet to submit a wrongdoing. This â€Å"ghost† additionally starts a need to associate indeed with his dad as he consistently continues saying â€Å"Remember thee? † This shows Hamlet misses his father a ton, and is happy to successfully permit King Hamlet find happiness in the hereafter. This discourse besides brings out characteristics in Hamlet that we have never observed loyalty and furthermore being compelled by a sense of duty. The ideal in this discourse shows this is, â€Å"So, uncle, there you are. Presently to my word; It is Adieu, farewell! emember me.  I have swornt. † (I. V. 111-112). Hamlet feels that except if he pledges to the phantom, he won’t discover the inspiration to murder Claudius. This additionally demonstrates he was dedicated to his dad apparition, despite the fact that he knew there was an opportunity it was really the fiend a ttempting to fool him into submitting a wrongdoing. In the third Soliloquy (Act 2, Scene 2), is a serious long discourse as he understands that the two his mom and Claudius had sent his two closest companions to keep an eye on him, and double-crossing him. This is additionally a similar discourse where he designs and gets ready for Claudius’s ruin. This is the place the tale of Hamlet really starts and the prologue to Hamlet’s inward sentiments. This is the first run through Hamlet really mention to the crowd what he feels inside, and what he will intend to do later on. This discourse additionally uncovers his inward dread on whether the apparition was the fallen angel, found in line 585 to 590 in Act II, Scene II-â€Å"†¦ The soul that I have seen May be the villain: and the fiend hath capacity To accept a satisfying shape; yea, and maybe Out of my shortcoming and my despairing, †As he is strong with such spirits, †Abuses me to damn me†¦Ã¢â‚¬ Hamlet begins to question if the phantom was even his dad, and if so he needs to get progressively verification that Claudius slaughtered his dad, and afterward understands that the on-screen characters were his devices to get Claudius. I imagine that Hamlet felt that if Claudius had a response to the play in a way that was ‘weird’ it would he realized that the apparition had come clean. This discourse moreover shows how eager Hamlet is as he needs to finish his pledge to the apparition and murder his uncle. This is seen, â€Å"Prompted to my vengeance by paradise and heck, Must, similar to a prostitute, unload my heart with words And fall a-reviling like a very drab† (II. II. 571-573). He is irate and eager that something as simple as executing as an individual is so extreme. I imagine that Hamlet, now doesn’t need to utilize words, and rather feels that activities is the main thing that will help get him to his objectives. This is the reason he utilizes the on-screen characters to re-establish, â€Å"The murder of Gonzago† which was like how Claudius executed the King. The one fundamental quality that I found in the speech, and all through the book, Hamlet, is the way that he thinks legitimately and doesn’t attempt to hurry into things excessively quick. A model in this talk is, â€Å"†¦Ill have grounds, more relative than this. the plays the thing, Wherein Ill catch the still, small voice of the king† (II. II. 590-592). He imagines that the fiend may be attempting to trick him and he required progressively verification that his uncle killed King Hamlet. The fourth monologue (Act 3, Scene 1) is the most recognized spe ech to the world, â€Å"To be or not to be†. This is the place Hamlet discusses life and demise, and despite the fact that we realize Hamlet is considering passing, he says, â€Å"But that the fear of something after death, The undiscoverd nation from whose bourn, No explorer returns, perplexes the will† (III. I. 78-80). This implies he is stressed on what occurs after he bites the dust, and the way that â€Å"afterlife† hasn’t been demonstrated, he is terrified to slaughter himself. Now he begins contending with himself on what occurs after death and discusses the numerous difficulty and torments of life. At that point he understands that since there is no confirmation that eternal life exists, he should proceed with his retribution. I accept that this discourse is likewise implies about whether he should proceed with his vengeance or not. This â€Å"indecision† inside Hamlet is the thing that causes the most measure of issues in the book, Hamlet, and with Hamlet himself. This monologue doesn’t especially show any characteristics inside Hamlet, however one quality that I saw truly caused me to acknowledge how incredible Hamlet was, was the way that regardless of how he believed, he didn’t surrender or discourage from his way of vengeance, making him a very reliable child to the ruler. The fifth speech (Act 3, Scene 3) is before the play has its peak, before Hamlet converses with his mom and unwittingly murders Polonius. Hamlet is very frantic with his mom, and needs to hurt her inwardly. He despite everything feels that she wedded Claudius with the goal that her evenings wouldn’t be desolate. He was so irate with her that he could have murdered her, yet he rather says, â€Å"Let me be brutal, not unnatural† (III. III. 379), which implied that he would be impolite to her yet, not submit a transgression by murdering her. â€Å"I will talk knifes to her, however use none† (III. III. 380). This implied he felt that he expected to talk seriously for what she did, yet not truly hurt her. This speech gives one principle normal for a saint inside Hamlet, which was not to hurt ladies. Hamlet promotion each option to truly hurt Gertrude for how she disfavored her sexual orientation, yet he avoided lifting his hands as he felt just as it would be â€Å"unnatural†. The way that he didn’t lose control till now, over what Gertrude did, shows how honorable he is and how he despite everything keeps the principles of his time, despite the fact that his mom didn’t. Thus, there will be deviations or negatif sway, for example, murder, assaulting, and so on. I think I understand that what the author states is correct. The Author likewise believes that the ethics of the general public diminish or even lose, â€Å" As ladies desert their common occupations as the managers of temperance and the instructors of culture â€Å". Ladies remained at home before, so their genuine wrongdoing only sometimes happened, however now it is something usual. Also, misguidedly pregnancy turns into a typical occurence for unmarried ladies as it aftereffects of taking themselves in contact with men in the general public where they work. I precisely concur with Mr. Osman’s proclamation. My neighbor were pregnant with only one parent present, as I was already aware she was apathetic, however after she had quite recently worked in an organization for around multi month, it happened. In outline, the contain of the article composed by Mr. Osman is the equivalent with my view. The facts confirm that ladies should remain at home, as there are more disavantage than advantage for social orders if lady who work outside their homes.

Essay The Situation for Refugees and Immigrants in the USA

The United States of America has always been a refuge where poor and oppressed people from the far corners of the world can come to begin a new life. Much of the nation’s allure to prospective immigrants is in its promise of equal opportunity for all, regardless of race, creed, or color. But the pressures of rising unemployment rates, congested cities, a crippled healthcare system, and national debt skyrocketing out of control have caused America to defend her borders against the influx of immigrants that threaten her already ailing economy. Still, despite all the heightened security measures incorporated in recent decades, a steady stream of immigrants continue to enter the country illegally. The Washington Times reports that there are†¦show more content†¦This mistrust of American society promotes a sense of isolation and alienation from the community. Authority figures, such as police and other first responders, may unwittingly strike fear into the hearts of these children because they have been conditioned to believe that these figures have the power, as well as the mandate, to destroy families. This mindset tends to discourage assimilation into mainstream American communities and promote instead the tendency of these families to cluster into small, ethnically concentrated barrios, or neighborhoods. Within these barrios, the culture and lifestyle of Mexico is recreated, which often reinforces psychological and physical isolation from mainstream American culture. Alliances are formed with others in similar circumstances, where commiseration often leads to a rising sense of resentment. It is not uncommon for angry groups to rise up in opposition to the society that is viewed as the oppressor. Evidence of this can be seen almost daily as senseless gang violence permeates our news broadcasts, plagues our communities, and terrorizes our citizens. Because they do not have the legal right to work in this country, undocumented immigrants earn very little. Unscrupulous employers are quick to exploit these workers, paying them considerably less than state minimum wage laws mandate. Thus, immigrant families are forced to live in sub-standard conditions and eek out anShow MoreRelatedShould Our Democracy Let Syrian Immigrants Into The United States?1654 Words   |  7 PagesShould our democracy let Syrian Immigrants into the United States? Emmeline Pankhurst Notes free essay sample

Pankhurst was a leading British womens rights activist, who led the movement to win the right for women to vote. BBC Emmeline Pankhurst was a womens rights activist, also known as a suffragette. She campaigned for rights in the 19th century when women could not choose who they married, they had to obey men, very few jobs were available for women, they did not receive the same education as men, and were not granted the vote until 1918. Pankhurst was born Emmeline Goulden on 14 July 1858 in Manchester. Her family had a tradition of radical politics. In 1879, she married Richard Pankhurst, a lawyer and supporter of the womens suffrage movement. However he died in 1898, leaving Emmeline a widow. In 1889, Emmeline founded the Womens Franchise League, which fought to allow married women to vote in local elections. In October 1903, along with her daughters, Christabel and Sylvia, she helped found the Womens Social and Political Union (WSPU) whose members were the first to be christened suffragettes. We will write a custom essay sample on Emmeline Pankhurst Notes or any similar topic specifically for you Do Not WasteYour Time HIRE WRITER Only 13.90 / page The WSPU was more militant than the Womens Franchise League and The National Union of Womens Suffrage Societies, and it soon became notorious for its actions. One of the WSPUs most famous members includes Emily Davison. The demonstrations of the WSPU included window smashing, arson and hunger strikes which astonished Britons. In 1913, Emily Davison was killed when she threw herself under the kings horse at the Derby as a protest at the governments continued failure to grant women the right to vote. Like many suffragettes, Emmeline was arrested on numerous occasions over the next few years and went on hunger strike herself, resulting in violent force-feeding. In 1913, in response to the wave of hunger strikes, the government passed what became known as the Cat and Mouse Act. Hunger striking prisoners were released until they grew strong again, and then re-arrested. This period of militancy was ended abruptly on the outbreak of war in 1914, when Emmeline turned her energies to supporting the war effort. In 1918, the Representation of the People Act gave voting rights to women over 30. Emmeline died aged 70 on 14 June 1928, shortly after women were granted equal voting rights with men.

The Color Purple Essays (1077 words) - Literature, Film, Fiction

The Color Purple The Color Purple The main theme this essay will be focusing on is the distinction between the "real" outcome of economic achievement as described in The Color Purple by the lynching of Celie's father, and its "alternative" economic view presented at the end of the novel depicting Celie's happiness and entrepreneurial success. We will attempt the task at hand by relating the novel to two Models (Historical and Empirical Data, Manners and Customs) of representation in the "real" and "alternative" worlds of The Color Purple. By focusing on the letters describing the lynching of Celie's father, and the letter describing Celie's economic stability and happiness (found in last letter), we will have established a clear distinction between the real and alternative worlds in relation to the economic situations presented throughout the novel. Manners and customs in the "real" generally work to maintain order, decorum, and stability. Within the novel the reality was that blacks had to work for whites on whatever terms were available. When using manners and customs to depict the real world of the novel, it is evident we are examining an external world based in a society where the white oppressor governs the oppressed black populace. The economic realities of white land ownership, near-monopoly of technical and business skills and control of financial institutions was in fact the accepted norm (Sowell 48). When presenting the term fact - we must account for the introduction of a second model, "historical and empirical data" in representing the real world of The Color Purple. As illustrated in the pages of American history books, it is evident that American Negro slavery had a peculiar combination of features. The key features of American slavery were that it followed racial or color lines and that it was slavery in a democratic country (Sowell 4). The fact that it existed in a democratic country meant that it required some extraordinary rationale to reconcile it with the prevailing values of the nation. Racism was an obvious response, whose effects were still felt more than a century after its abolition (Sowell 3). The Models (Manners and Customs, Historical and Empirical Data) of representation in the real world of The Color Purple was made clear when we discover that Celie's biological father was lynched for being a prosperous storekeeper. "And as he (the father) did so well farming and everything he turned his hand to prospered, he decided to open a store, and try his luck selling dry goods as well. Well, his store did so well that he talked his two brothers into helping him run it. . . . Then the white merchants began to get together and complain that his store was taking all the black business away from them. . . . This would not do"(Walker 180). The store the black men owned took the business away from the white men, who then interfered with the free market (really the white market) by lynching their black competitors. Class relations, in this instance, are shown to motivate lynching. Lynching was the act of violence white men performed to invoke the context of black inferiority and sub-humanity to the victim, exposing the reality of the economic bases of racial oppression (Berlant 217). The black individual served as a figure of racial "justice" for whites; the black individual was an economic appendage reduced to the embodiment of his or her alienation (Berlant 224). "Color" in the southern U.S. during the early 1900s was synonymous with inferiority. When discussing the economic alternative world illustrated in The Color Purple Celie situates herself firmly in the family's entrepreneurial tradition; she runs her business successfully. Where her father and uncles were lynched for presuming the rights of full American citizens, Celie is ironically rewarded for following in her family's entrepreneurial interests. Celie's shift from underclass victim to capitalist entrepreneur has only positive signification. Her progression from exploited black woman, as woman, as sexual victim, is aided by her entrance into the economy as property owner, manager of a small business, storekeeper - in short capitalist entrepreneur. The Models (Manners and Customs, Historical and Empirical Data) of representation in the alternative world presented at the end of the novel, leave us with the notion of a happy ending for our heroine Celie. Here Historical and Empirical Data has completely been suspended or erased form existence. There is no reminiscing on evidence of any social mistreatment or racial abuse. Also the Manners and Customs have been reversed, emphasizing that it is completely natural/normal for a black woman to be running a successful business in the deep American South (which in the real is unheard of,

Hourani on Middle Eastern History

Hourani on Middle Eastern History Albert Hourani’s article addresses the ideas and approaches that historians use to map the history of Middle East. Hourani explained his own points of view about Middle Eastern history during a joint conference by the British and French Societies of Middle Eastern and Arabic history-studies.Advertising We will write a custom coursework sample on Hourani on Middle Eastern History specifically for you for only $16.05 $11/page Learn More The author uses his personal understanding and impressions to articulate his argument. Furthermore, the speaker refers to his vast experience as a Middle-Eastern history scholar. In the talk, Hourani references several 20th century publications on the history of Middle East. Hourani’s main argument is that several inconsistencies are manifested during the mapping of Middle Eastern history. This paper explores Hourani’s main ideas on how history scholars should approach Middle Eastern historical studies in o rder not to make false conclusions or mistakes. The scholar points out the methods of viewing Middle Eastern history he considers inappropriate. The author begins his talk by noting the influence both British and French colonial administrations have had on the Middle Eastern history. According to Hourani, these two administrations promoted the culture of extensive historical scholarship in Middle East. Furthermore, Hourani recognizes that the evolution of Middle Eastern history depends on the contributions of various European historians. The speaker states that Middle East is a general term that has several geographical, historical, and religious associations. For instance, Albert Hourani poses the question whether or not these associations could mean that the Middle East is a single historical and geographical unit. After that Hourani explores this question by referencing publications, which address the origins of Islam and other Arab cultures.Advertising Looking for course work on history? Let's see if we can help you! Get your first paper with 15% OFF Learn More The speaker’s main point is that it is erroneous to address the history of a certain geographical region without considering its association and interaction with other regions and cultures. According to Hourani, it is not possible to consider the history of the geographical area that covers the territory from Nile to Oxus (Middle East) as homogenous. The speaker notes that the history of Middle East is definitely connected to the history of adjacent areas such as northern India and inner Asia. The most significant, prominent and influential time of Middle Eastern history includes the era of the Ottoman Empire. Historians note that the period between the 15th and 18th centuries stands out as the time of dominance for the Arabic culture and its creativity. Hourani argues that the influences of both the Ottoman Empire and Islam are pertinent to the Middle Eastern history. The speaker points out that the last congregation of most Middle Eastern countries occurred in the times the Ottoman Empire. During the Ottomans rule, several countries became parts of the Empire. Consequently, the Ottoman Empire unified these regions under Islam. Hourani notes that Islam is the last great force that united the Arabic nations into a monolithic linguistic and cultural unit. However, the history of Middle East outside of these three elements should not be ignored due to the prominence of Islam. According to Hourani, any historical work that addresses Middle Eastern development must consider the influences of the Ottoman Empire, Islam, and European colonization. Nevertheless, historians find it difficult to map the history of Middle East in the period between 11th and 15th centuries due to its diversity. Hourani also points out the difficulties of mapping the history of Islam during the last fifty years because most Arabic countries have separated and turned into indep endent states.Advertising We will write a custom coursework sample on Hourani on Middle Eastern History specifically for you for only $16.05 $11/page Learn More In his talk, Hourani sought to address the different methodologies and strategies that could be used when studying the history of Middle East. According to the speaker, the influences of Islam and the Ottoman Empire should neither be ignored, nor should they be the limiting factors in the study of Middle Eastern History, as this territory is proved to have undergone multiple various influences and tendencies, causing diverse patterns and processes in its development.

Make up one Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 250 words

Make up one - Essay Example As mentioned in the review, delay in time affects â€Å"jury’s decision† which prolongs a victim’s agony. A recent example of this is illustrated in the recent news report by New Haven Register : â€Å"A backlog at the state forensic laboratory is contributing to a delay in the case against a 33-year-old West Haven man accused of raping and killing a 7-year-old girl, a judge said Thursday†( Tinley, 2010) The second recommendation that should be done is to simply establish the right procedure for forensic requests. The first-come first-serve basis must be observed along with a system that thoroughly evaluates the importance of a request. This recommendation shows that the crime lab has difficulty in providing timely forensic results which deters catching criminals. â€Å"All labs have to be accredited, which costs money. But ask police and prosecutors and they will tell you it is the best expenditure that they ever made. Nobody hates bad lab work more than a prosecutor does, thats how cases get lost. They hate it. It is another win-win proposition for the criminal justice system†(Lyons & Burton, 2001, p. 10) A serial killer may be able to escape and continue to commit crime in other states as a result of this delay. Again, implementation of this depends on the managers of the crime laboratory. They may not be wanting in forensic skills, however they need to be trained about management so they can evaluate, and assess their current policies. The third recommendation that must be implemented the least is developing a system of notification for cross-over requests. Again, the recommendation I chose is all about establishing a system which can be delivered by the Technical Assistance Section. It is ironic that while victims are suffering and perpetrators are on the loose, evidence is ready but no one is fully aware of that. Its implementation depends on how the management of the

Changing World Lasting Values Essay Example for Free

Changing World Lasting Values Essay You hear many tales nowadays — that the world is absurd, that everything has changed, that old moral values have died. This is all non-sense, for if you look for reality beneath the clutter of words which hide it, you will rediscover the eternal man. True values were not invented for the pleasure of senile moralists. They exist because without them, neither society nor happiness could survive. Here, then, are a few rules as old as civilization itself which remain true despite the advances of science and technology. The first is that man must live for something other than himself. The man who meditates ceaselessly about himself finds a thousand reasons to be unhappy. He has notaccomplished everything he wanted to or should have done; he has not gotten everything he thought he deserved; he has not been loved as he dreamed of being loved- But if he lives for ideals outside of himself — for his faith or his country, for his friends, his wife and family, he miraculously forgets all his petty worries. In trying to make others happy, he also makes himself happy. The veritable inner world is the veritable outer world. The second rule is that man must act. The joy of the soul is inaction. Instead of lamenting the absurdity of the world, let us try to transform our own little corner. It is not impossible. We cannot change the whole universe, but who hopes to do that? Our objective is much more simple: to do our job and do it well, to become a master at it. Each one works in his own field. I write books, the carpenter assembles my bookshelves, the policeman directs traffic, the engineer, constructs, the minister governs. All of them, kept busy at work which they know how to do well, are happy. This is so true that when people have leisure time, they keep busy with apparently useless activities such as games and sports. As for useful action, we know from experience that it is effective: an active mayor makes a city prosperous; an active priest brings vitality to a parish. Happy are those in whose eyes men look for order. The third rule is that one must believe in the power of the will. It is not true that the future is predetermined- A great man can change the course of history. Any man who has the courage and the will can change his own future. Naturally, none of us is all- powerful. Each mans freedom has its limits. Freedom lies between the border of the possible and the will. It is beyond my power to prevent war, but I can perform an act which, multiplied by millions, will be effective. It is not possible for me to win a battle, but it is up to me to be a courageous soldier. Since this limitation of the will is dependent on what one dares, one must not worry about his limitation; but do the best he can. Finally, the fourth, and most precious of all values, is faithfulness, Faithfulness to promises, contracts, to others, and to oneself. One must be among those who can be counted upon. Faithfulness is not an easy virtue. Thousand of temptations are thrown across our paths. Faithfulness in marriage, said Bernard Shaw, is no more natural to man than the cage to the tiger. Undoubtedly, faithfulness is natural. It is born of a voluntary decision, constantly renewed, which helps us to rise above our natures. But it gives us the lasting joy of being at peace with ourselves. I may forego an immediate pleasure to assure myself the great joy in the future of looking at my past without shame, but with pride. Every society in which citizens live for naught but fleeting pleasures, where men no longer trust each other, and whose members let themselves go is doomed. When Rome let go and ceased to set store by the values which made her great, she perished. When France clung to eternal values she was saved. Modern technology may change ones modes of action, but they change neither its values, the reasons for it, nor the duty of faithfulness. Thus it was in the beginning and so it will always be.

Epiphany in Astronomer’s Wife, When I consider how my light is spent and Everything That Rises Must :: Comparison Compare Contrast Essays

Epiphany in Astronomer’s Wife, When I consider how my light is spent and Everything That Rises Must Converge The short story, â€Å"Astronomer’s Wife,† by Kay Boyle is one of perseverance and change. Mrs. Ames, because of neglect from her husband, becomes an emotionless and almost childlike woman. As a result, Mrs. Ames, much like John Milton in his poem, â€Å"When I consider how my light is spent† (974), is in darkness, unaware of the reality and truth of the outside world. However, the plumber who is trying to repair leaking pipes in her house, starts by repairing the leaking pipes in her heart. He helps her realize that the life she is living is not a fulfilling one. In short, to Mrs. Ames, â€Å"[†¦] life is an open sea, she sought to explain in sorrow, and to survive women cling to the floating debris on the tide† (Boyle 59). Similarly, in Flannery O’Connor’s short story, â€Å"Everything That Rises Must Converge,† the mother is also â€Å"cling[ing] to floating debris† (Boyle 59). She is trying to hold on to her old life, the one in which she is socially better than blacks and other women. But, like Milton and Mrs. Ames, she is soon forced to see the world in a new perspective. Thus, a new life is created for Mrs. Ames and the mother after their epiphanies, with the realization of a new world, one in which hard work and understanding can lead to change in one’s life and of one’s identity. Before Mrs. Ames and the mother realize the restrictions of their old lives, their worlds have been full of disillusionment and ignorance. Mrs. Ames, for example, is oppressed by her husband’s silence and the search for love and tenderness from anyone, because she lives each day alone, ignored by her scornful husband. And, as a result of being left companionless, she does not mature, rather she longs for tenderness. In other words, Boyle explains her dysfunctional relationship with her husband, â€Å"The mystery and silence of her husband’s mind lay like a chiding finger of her lips. Her eyes were gray for the light had been extinguished in them† (57). That is, Mrs. Ames’ spirit remains oppressed by her husband who treats her as a child, and, in doing so, isolates her from his world.

Motivational Interviewing Motivation And Process

Motivational Interviewing The process of motivational interviewing is essentially about creating intrinsic motivation to change within the client (Moyers, 1998). The choice to change must originate with the client and the process for helping this occur begins with motivational interviewing. There are two phases within motivational interviewing, the first focuses on increasing the client’s motivation to change and the second phase is negotiating a plan and consolidating commitment. It is important to understand the traps that can be encountered within this process, such as the question/answer trap. In this trap the client is led by the counselor with little chance to have free speech to explain themselves because the counselor is just focused on the next question instead of focusing on where the client is leading them. This trap is very similar to the expert trap in the fact that the client is left to believe they cannot find answers for themselves; they instead must listen to the expert who is giving t hem the answers. This is most definitely not the way to motivate a client to make changes for themselves. Other traps include premature focus, denial, labeling, and blaming; all of which can prevent the client from opening up in the treatment process. Motivational interviewing includes opening strategies to allow the process of eliciting readiness, providing feedback or information to the patient, and then eliciting the patient s interpretation of the information to flowShow MoreRelatedNutrition Counseling : The Process Of Guiding A Client Toward A Healthy Nutrition Lifestyle1396 Words   |  6 PagesNutrition counselling can be defined as â€Å"the process of guiding a client toward a healthy nutrition lifestyle by meeting normal nutritional needs and solving problems that are barriers to change†.
